JP010345

Ernesto Molina Vásquez, painter. Born in Santiago, Chile, in 1857. Died in the same city in June 1904.

He began studying painting with José Mercedes Ortega, who was also his friend and with whom he formed a Painting Academy in 1876.

In 1887, he received a scholarship to study in Europe. He remained there for over ten years. He trained as a genre and landscape painter in Spain with Professor Pradilla and became enthusiastic about painting exotic subjects, a trend introduced by Delacroix. He traveled throughout Spain and North Africa in search of inspiration.

He returned to Chile in 1891. From 1892 to 1896 he traveled through France, Italy, Spain, Asia and Africa.

In this work we see a portrait of an African man wearing a colorful turban in shades of red and yellow, framed in a beautiful gold-painted wooden frame carved with flowers.
